Texas Book Fest 2025

Was in Seattle at Auburn Library Friday night, where @thatnerdchick slipped me some Chipotle to I could dine in my preferred style in the green room:

Then it was a lot of this fun action:

Great time meeting @sgj.bsky.social at the auburn library event last night with some of my @nomsbookclub.bsky.social friends. Thank you to @kcls.org and Stephen for putting on an awesome event. Diving in to Killer on The Road/Babysitter Lives next, hopefully i dont ruin @ainibot.bsky.social paint job

Got back to the room pushing midnight, and wired, had to pack and be ready for my car at 2:30am to get to Austin, hit Luby’s with Eric Vespe and his wife Kelsey:

(proof of Luby’s)

And, for the first ever (!), I got THIS room at the hotel!

(and, I did/would have some wild, wild nightmares)

Then it was off to compete in LitCrawl’s horror trivia, where I lucked into the trophy:

Congrats to a sleep-deprived @sgj.bsky.social on winning the horror trivia night at the Texas Book Festival. 🏆

Next day, of course it was Chipotle, twice (same one):

And then the main event, but, on the way there . . . um, let me quote myself:

On the way to my event here, late as usual, Texas book festival, Chipotle tea in hand, and we see this Psycho long line of people on the sidewalk, not where we’re walking. I mosey over, ask who they’re in line for, and: me. Thanks, y’all. Should be fun.

Inside that big Methodist church:

Texas Book Festival update:Fun panel on history and horror with Stephen Graham Jones and Bret Anthony Johnson

And after, the two-hour signing line:

Had a great weekend at the @texasbookfest.bsky.social ❤️ Got to see some great panels with @sgj.bsky.social , Tracy Deonn, Adam Silvera, and Dan Chaon. Always a great weekend full of friends and books #waggybookworm #texasbookfest

Which I’d guesstimated for my publicist would be over at 4:30 (we were trying to schedule a plane home . . . ), but, turns out I was slightly wrong:

Then, for a while, it was just me up in the green room—the Texas Monthly offices, I believe. Where I could hang out in the cold wind up on the roof and . . . have a pretty cool view:

Can call this goodbye-one “Self-Portrait of an Artist, Fading Away”:

(it’s on the way back into the green room)

Anyway, always great, being at this fest. First time I showed up was . . . 2001? 2002? I’d drive down from Lubbock in our junky Jeep Grand Cherokee, sleep on my sister-in-law’s living room floor downtown, walk over to the Capitol grounds, do my panels and tell myself that someday, someday. Last year on stage with Noah Hawley was cool, but this year was just as excellent. Bet I’m back again before too long. Texas, I mean: it’s still home.
