This Is Where My Heart is Buried

But there’s so, so, so many favorites from that spinner rack. Here’s the ones I can think of right now—my plan is to keep updating this for the rest of my life.

Anyway, if I had to pick two all-timers, two favorites of the favorites? That’s probably always going to be:

But there’s also that old question of, if I’m being asked, which ones aside from Secret Wars have you read the most? Which ones will you forever be reading? Also easy. If I kept stats, the numbers would be all out of hand in the columns for these three:

But, all-time favorite characters? These two crazy cats:

But, man, do I love it when a writer can cartoon. When a cartoonist can write? I think what I love is when I can’t tell which comes first. Really, I think neither do. I think they happen in the same moment, and something amazing and magical and permanent like these happen:

And, my favorite super hero rides of ever? This can go long, so, I’ll try to be somewhat succinct:

(okay, yeah, that last one’s maybe only technically and sort of a tights & capes book. but? it may also be the most tights & capie one of them all? and, what about Miracleman, right? I know, I know. has my heart ever beat faster, reading a comic, than . . . was it the first, six, seven issues, maybe?)

Oh, but too, I’ve been so digging this sort-of-genre of “capes in their twilight”—maybe it’s because I, too, am getting greyer, but may still have one more fight left in me:

(hm. all Marvel. odd)

What about non-capes, though, right? Such wonderful stuff always happening—not ALL of which is Brian Wood:

How about favorite arc, right? Let’s see, let’s see . . .

Title that held it together best? So many good & essential ones, but, for my money, this one brings it home:

Anyway, that’s all for the moment, but that’s only because I can’t find any of my thousand lists about these, AND because I’m updating (or, extending out from the stub it’s always been . . .) this page from Palo Alto, CA, where my comic book shelves aren’t, meaning I can’t browse . . .

    Hi Stephen,
I am one of the host of the Pages and Panels podcast. Its a show where each episode is an interview with a creator discussing the process and approach behind a specific piece of their work. We have over 160 episode, all creator/creative team driven interviews. The majority of are episodes focus on creators from the comic medium but have episodes with creators from tv, film, action figures and prose work. We are huge fans of your work,(the only good Indians wrecked me, so good) and were psyched you did work at Marvel. We cover a lot of horror in comics and horror in prose and were wondering if you would be open to doing an episode about your work and also the difference in horror in comics and prose. my email is kw972859 at gmail. Thanks for any possible time and consideration!
